12" x 16" in original gilt frame with lable on the back reading "Nude
at Table, A. Henry Nordhausen" also frame lable from
"Newcome-Maclin Co. Picture frame Makers. New York"
Biography from The Columbus Museum Uptown, GA.
August Henry Nordhausen was born in Hoboken, New Jersey, in 1901, the
youngest child of Henry and Katherine Nordhausen who had emigrated from
Germany in the late 1880s. After high school Nordhausen spent two years
at the New York School of Fine Arts before venturing to Europe in 1922.
In Europe he found a number of educational opportunities available to
him, and for two and a half years he studied at the Royal Academy of
Fine Art in Munich with Hugo Von Habermann and Hans Hofmann. Upon
returning to the United States, Nordhausen persisted with his vocation
in the arts through commercial work and teaching, never forgetting his
own academic training. Throughout his career, he continually entered
competitions at the National Academy of Design, the Art Institute of
Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Metropolitan
Museum of Art, and won prizes in many juried exhibitions. After he
served in the military during World War II, the GI Bill enabled
Nordhausen to receive additional artistic training at the New School
for Social Research in New York. By the 1950s he was able to
travel extensively due to increased sales of his paintings and the
receipt of many portrait commissions. He traveled to Italy, Greece and
Scandinavia before finding his way to Columbus,
Georgia. For Nordhausen, Georgia became an area where he received many
portrait commissions. As a result, he established a studio in Columbus
in 1960 and eventually settled in this community. |

Joseph
Dawley
An
Oil on Canvas Portrait of a Bearded old man, Signed UR
“Dawley” (Joseph William Dawley ), Size of canvas
16" X 20".
This
biography from the Archives of AskART:
“A
graduate of Southern Methodist University in
Dallas, Texas, Joseph Dawley became well-known in the 1960s and 70s for
his realistic character studies and landscapes. In 1975, he was
diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, and his style became much looser,
more colorful, and impressionistic.
The
following, submitted March 2005 from the daughter of the artist:
Although raised and educated in Texas,
Joe Dawley moved to
New Jersey in the early 1960's where he remained. He painted in the
traditional Old Masters style until 1982, when the symptoms of
Parkinson's - diagnosed in 1975 - necessitated brain surgery. One of
his accolades during that period was being commissioned to paint the
official portrait of Mother Seton for the canonization in 1976.
After the surgery and much recovery
time, he found he had
lost his fine motor skills needed to paint realism as he had. He taught
himself impressionism and was very successful at it. He has appeared on
all three major networks - ABC, NBC, and CBS - and was featured in
"Life" magazine in June 1993. Today, after about 30 years of
deterioration from the Parkinson's, Joe Dawley continues to paint in
yet another style, much more abstract and definitely from the heart. He
may not always be able to speak, remember names, or even walk, but he
seems to always be able to
paint.
Dawley was
invited by the White House to paint a
painting for use as the official 1994 Christmas Card. Two paintings
were created for this purpose and are both currently in the White
House. Also in Washington, D.C., Joe's painting "Snowfall in the Park"
is the 1995 Christmas Card for Very Special Arts, which is an
international educational affiliate of The John F. Kennedy Center for
the Performing Arts." |

Robert Watson
Robert Watson (American 1923 - 2004)
Oil on canvas 20" x 12" signed and dated LR "R. Watson 70" also
titled on stretcher "Moment Of Truth" in original black frame.
Biography by Vincent Price
“Robert
Watson (1923 - 2004) was born in Martinez, California in a big house
overlooking the bay, and with him was born the subject of all his
paintings - the loneliness of man in the mysterious world. California
provided this subject with a stage of vast space on which to grow and
evolve.
It wasn't until after High School, odd jobs, a sojourn in
the Army and study at Universities of California and Wisconsin that
Watson's lonely man, mysterious world became concrete through reality
of paint on canvas. This occurred between 1943 and 1947 when he went to
New York and later spent eight weeks studying with Frederic Taubes in
Wisconsin. Watson's career, a highly successful one, began with his
first one-man show in 1947 at Gump's and in 1950 in the California
Palace of the Legion of Honor, both in San Francisco. |
